Christians and the Upcoming Election

I have never sought to use the pastorate as a platform for the advancement of American politics.  I will not do so now. But I must state emphatically that I have never been more aware of the importance of an election than the one coming this November.  I do believe that each of us as Christians are to strive to act as salt and light [Matt 5:13-14] as we participate in elections the out- comes of which can either further or hinder our culture toward those moral principles set forth within God’s Word. Especially within a democracy, believers should exercise their freedom and responsibility to vote for candidates who are competent, will serve as strong and wise leaders, and who are people who will seek to uphold the moral values revealed within Scripture.

For unbelievers who have not Christ [The Rock], how unsettling conditions in our world must be. They are without Christ and without hope. On the other hand, Christians rest securely on the knowledge of what the Lord authoritatively declares in Ps 103:19 - “The Lord has established His throne in the heavens, and His sovereignty rules over all.”

Believers have the security of knowing that history is in God’s hands, that God causes all things to work together for good, Rom. 8:28, that we are the objects of His beloved care, Ps 23:1, and, that no matter what happens in our wobbly world, we will enjoy forever the blessedness of our great eternal salvation with Christ in heaven, Jn 10:27-30. But unbelievers especially those residing in our Country have much cause for alarm. In their spiritual darkness, certainly they have no fear of what may be imminent, the wrath of a longsuffering but holy God, Rom 3:18.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court ruling of Roe v. Wade thirty-six years ago this coming January, parents have murdered their own helpless children at the rate of between one to two million [in our Nation alone] children per year using the most barbaric methods to do so. Their doctors perform these killings because Presidents nominate judges who do not recognize that murder is not a choice in our Country. God’s mercy and patience toward us has been startling. But there will likely be an end to out Creator’s striving. God has generously blessed our nation, and therefore He likely will hold our Nation especially accountable, Lk 12:48.

Notwithstanding recent scientific advances which clearly magnify what is evident within Creation, that evolution is a lie and that our world was made by a supernatural, omnipotent and infinitely wise Creator, our educational system is permitted to censure Creationism in the science classes of our public school systems. Ps 19:1-2 declares that God’s creative glory is seen clearly in the universe, “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.”

God is the Creator of man; woman is His handiwork. God is the author and authority over the institution of marriage. And yet political forces within our Country increasingly endeavor to sanction the marriage of homosexuals, the adoption of children by homosexual “parents”, and there is now a growing threat that Christians may be prohibited from preaching even within God’s own sanctuaries what the Lord declares clearly in 1 Cor 6:9-10 - that anyone who practices the sin of homosexuality will by judged for their sin and blocked entrance into God’s eternal kingdom in heaven. Like all sinners, they will abide forever in the lake of fire unless they repent finding forgiveness through faith alone in Christ, Rev 19:20:11-15.

International terrorism and tribal warfare have spread violence throughout this world and we are warned continually of what would happen to our Country were a terrorist group to get their hands on a nuclear weapon. The United States desperately needs strong, courageous, leaders who are guided within by a clear moral compass guided by uncompromising principles of integrity and righteousness.

We critically need lawmakers, judges and members within our executive branches at the federal, state and municipal levels, who will work actively to restore the teaching of Creationism within the classroom. We desperately need leaders who will overturn legislation and prior court decisions legalizing the murder of unborn infants within our health care facilities. Politicians who will actively oppose efforts being made by states like California to grant marital status and/ or to give authority to adopt children to those enslaved to the sin of homosexuality must act courageously to stop this movement dead in its tracks.

At such a time, I urge you to make sure that you do the following three things required of us as responsible citizens within our beloved Country:

  • Make sure that you are registered to vote in the next election.

  • Become informed as much as you can on the issues at stake in this election. We must follow the command of God’s Word in 1 Thess 5:21, But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good;”

  • And by all means make sure that you vote in the upcoming election.

Scripture indicates that all governing authorities are established by God and the Lord commands His children to submit to and to honor those whom the Lord raises up to govern over us. [See Rom 13:1-2 and 1 Peter 2:17.] Certainly the clear exception is where ruling authorities command us to do something contrary to God’s Word. This is illustrated when Jewish authorities command the Apostles to stop proclaiming Christ in Jerusalem. Scripture records their response in Acts 5:27-29 – “But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than men.”

Yes we must submit to and honor those whom God grants governmental authority over us. We must love homosexuals who like we are sinners in need of God’s forgiveness. We must also patiently endeavor to restore the true Science of “origin” into the class room. We must pray for God’s blessing on our Nation, 1 Tim 2:1-3. But at the same time, we must strive to appear as lights amidst a crooked and perverse generation. With the light given to us by the Lord, we must make sure that we vote intelligently and wisely this November with the above mentioned moral issues at stake clearly in mind.
