The 70 weeks of Daniel is a three-fold prophecy concerning the nation of Israel, the city of Jerusalem, and the sanctuary within
Israel. Given the context of Dan 9:1-19 [Daniel’s prayer], this prophecy is God’s promise of future blessing and difficulties for both the city and the sanctuary as well as Daniel’s people. The 70 weeks begin in 445 BC [Neh 2:1-8] with the decree of the Persian King Artaxerxes to rebuild Israel’s city and temple. The 70 weeks end with the 2ND coming of Christ when the Lord destroys the
anti-christ and establishes His millennial reign.

The English word “weeks” in the original means 7 units of time. These can be seven units of seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, years, centuries, or millennia depending on the context. The context calls for an interpretation of units of years [See Dan 9:2, Jer 25:11]. Thus each of the 70 weeks consists of 7 years. Therefore the 70 weeks can be calculated: 70 x 7 or 490 total years.

The 490 years are divided in the text into three divisions. The first division consists of 7 weeks or 49 years. The second division
consists of 62 weeks or 434 years. The third division is comprised of one week or 7 years; [49 + 434 + 7 = 490 yrs.]

There is no “time travel” gap between the 1st and 2nd divisions of time within Daniel’s 70 weeks. Thus the first two divisions totaling 483 years [once they start] continue without interruption. However there is a gap in time between the 1st two divisions and the 3rd division of one week [the last 7 years].

Following the 1st two divisions [after the 1st 69 weeks of Daniel (or 7 x 69 which = 483 years)], two events are prophesied: 1] the crucifixion of the Messiah; and 2) the destruction of the temple by the Roman Empire [which occurred in 70 AD].

The first division of time begins with the decree of Artaxerxes [see above] in 445 BC and continues without interruption for 483 which is the precise time that Jesus entered Jerusalem on a foal of a don-key as the messianic King of Israel [”Palm Sunday”]. But, upon his entrance into the city, Christ was in tears [Lk 9:41+]. Even though Daniel’s people shouted the words echoing the future prophecy in Ps 118:26 of the Messiah’s return to Jerusalem, the Lord knew that

Israel was in a state of hardened unbelief. This was anything but a time of celebration for Israel despite outward appearances. On the contrary, it was a time of God’s rejection of this Nation.

Concurrent with this rejection is a suspension by God of Daniel’s prophecy leaving one week [7 years] remaining within the 70 weeks. This 7 year prophecy has been suspended throughout the present church age until the

After the rapture, there will be a great apostasy of the “church”. All professing believers that are not saved will be “left behind” when Christ snatches up His true Church into the air and takes them to heaven. Concurrent with this apostasy, the son of lawlessness will be revealed. The Day of the Lord will have arrived. [See 1 Thess 4:13-18; 1 Thess 5:1-11; 2 Thess 2:1-3].

As per Paul’s instructions in 1 and 2 Thessalonians, the day of the Lord will arrive like a thief in the night. When they are experiencing a false peace and safety, sudden destruction will come upon Israel and upon the whole world like the “labor pains” of a woman about to give birth to her child.

This is what is prophesied in Dan 9:26-27. The “prince” [leader] of the
people will come from the former sphere of the ancient Roman Empire which destroyed the temple in 70 AD. As we shall see more clearly in Daniel 2 & 7, this leader will arise out of the future revived Roman Empire. He will come in the end times. He will enter into a deceptive covenant of peace with Israel allowing her to rebuild her temple and commence sacrifices which ceased in 70 AD within the holy of holies.

This deceptive covenant of peace begins the last seven years of Daniel’s 70 weeks. But in the middle of this last week of years, in other words 3 and ½ years after the so-called “firm” covenant is made, the anti-christ will break this covenant. He will put an end to the sacrifices; and he will bring a defiling abomination into the holy of holies. This defilement will continue throughout the balance of Daniel’s last week [the last 3 and ½ years of the total 490 years of Daniel’s 70 week prophecy]. At the end of this 3 and ½ year time period, as Dan 9:27 indicates, the anti-christ will be destroyed.
